Siv ate another mouthful of pad thai noodles. Yum. So good.

She eyed the TV and watched the NFL game. “No!”

“Your team is going down, my badass goddess.”

She shot Ryder a look. He was sprawled on the other end of the couch, shoving a mountain of food in his mouth. The man must work out constantly to stay in such good shape.

“Or should I say gudinna.” He waggled his eyebrows.

She fought back a smile. “I’m not your goddess.”

“Yes, you are. How about skatt?”

Treasure. She wrinkled her nose.

He ate another mouthful of noodles. “I know. Månestråle.”

Moonbeam. She laughed, but deep down, she was touched he’d taken the time to learn the Norwegian words.”

“No, it’ll definitely be honningblomst.”

Honeyflower. She shook her head and forced herself to look back at the game. The man was just too tempting. Her team wasn’t having a great quarter. “My team looks tough and scrappy. They’ll fight back.” She was cheering on the San Francisco 49ers. It seemed right to support the team of her new home.

Ryder grunted and sipped his beer. They’d had several good-natured arguments over football in the last hour.

His cell phone rang and he grabbed it. Then he rolled his eyes. “One of my brothers ratted me out.” He pressed the phone to his ear. “Hi, Mom.” He paused. “I’m fine. A few bruises, that’s all.” Another pause. “Mom, I promise. I looked worse when Cam and I fought over that bicycle when I was in the fifth grade.” He grinned. “You were so lucky to be blessed with three boys.” He caught Siv’s gaze and winked. “Mom, I’m helping Vander with a case, so I won’t be home for a bit. Can you feed Crank for me?”

“Who’s Crank?” Siv murmured.

“My cat doesn’t hate just you, Mom. He hates everyone. It isn’t personal.”

Siv raised her brows. Ryder had a cat.

“Actually, I’m not alone. I’m working the case with a beautiful Norwegian lady Vander hired. She’s former special forces and I’m trying my best to get her to date me.”

Siv’s eyes widened. She waved a hand at him. What the hell was he doing?

“Her name’s Siv. I know, it’s pretty, right? You’ll love her, and absolutely, when we finish this case, I’ll bring her over for dinner.”

Siv shook her head.

“Will do, Mom. Love you.”

Sagging back on the couch, Siv looked at the ceiling. It was pretty hard to resist a man who clearly adored his mother. “You shouldn’t have told your mother I’d come for dinner.”

“Now you have to come.” He looked smug. Then when he shifted a few times, she realized he was uncomfortable.

“You need more pills?” She rose.

He gingerly touched his side. “Yeah, maybe.”

She knew it wasn’t good if he agreed so readily. She was surprised how much she hated seeing him hurt. She found the pills and the arnica cream that she’d bought from the pharmacy.

She strode back into the living room. The apartment was really great—she eyed the magnificent view—but a little too fancy for her.

“Here.” She handed the pills over.

He took them and washed them down with some beer.
